Invitation to the FDI/SDFDS Military Dental Congress
22-23 September in Stockholm, Sweden
1 FDI/SDFDS Scope
The annual meeting of the FDI World Dental Federation will be held in Stockholm 24-27 September 2008. The FDI meeting is preceded by the Section Defence Forces Dental Services (SDFDS) meeting 22-23 September 2008. The Swedish Armed Forces Dental Service is hosting the SDFDS meeting which is held at the Swedish National Defence College, Stockholm.
The scope of the SDFDS meetings is to provide a world forum for the exchange of ideas, innovations, concepts and experiences within the areas of Defence Forces Dental Services. The SDFDS meetings are attended by Military Delegates from many countries throughout the world.
2 Invitation to the SDFDS 2008 meeting
Addressees (according to the Mailing List) are hereby invited to attend the SDFDS meeting at the Swedish National Defence College (www.fhs.se) in Stockholm 22 – 23 September 2008. Delegates are welcome to make presentations, complying with the theme described above, during the two days of Military Conferences. Abstracts must be sent to the Secretariat no later than 31 July, 2008.
3 SDFDS 2008 Registration of participation
Delegates are kindly requested to register their participation by forwarding complete and detailed administrative information, using the SDFDS 2008 Registration Form. Registrations must be sent to the Secretariat by mail/electronic version or telefax no later than 31 July, 2008.
4 Protocol and Administrative Information
Information about the congress location, congress hotel and finances (expected congress costs) is found in Annex 1. The Registration Form is found in Annex 2 and the Scientific Session Form in Annex 3.
Delegates are requested to arrange their own transportation and accommodations. Please note that there are rooms blocked at a designated hotel (with discount) specifically for the Military Delegates attending SDFDS. 5 SDFDS 2008 Meeting Programme
The details of the SDFDS 2008 meeting including an overview programme will be available at the SDFDS web site mid April 2008. A detailed tentative programme will be available on the same web site mid August 2008.
6 SDFDS 2008 Cultural and Social events
There will be an informal welcoming reception on the evening of 21 September. A hosted Host Nation Dinner (Welcome Dinner) will be held Monday 22 September. The second day of Military Conferences will include a visit (afternoon) to a military facility. An accompanying persons´ programme will be organised during the two days of Military Conferences.
7 SDFDS 2008 Language
The official language of the SDFDS is English and all presentation submissions must be typed in English. The SDFDS can apply for translation services for the two days of Military Conferences from the FDI World Dental Federation (limited to one language).
8 SDFDS Dress code
The Military Conferences are attended in Service Dress.
9 Mailing list and distribution of this Invitation
This SDFDS 2008 Invitation is disseminated to FDI member countries through their Diplomatic missions in Sweden and through Swedish Diplomatic missions abroad. The Invitation should be forwarded to the “Chief of Military Dental Services” of the respective countries.

LETTER OF INVITATION
An official Letter of Invitation to the SDFDS 2008 meeting is disseminated to FDI member countries through their Diplomatic missions in Sweden and through Swedish Diplomatic missions abroad. A personal Letter of Invitation will be sent upon request. This invitation is intended only to facilitate participant´s travel and visa arrangements and does not imply provisions of any financial or other support. If an invitation letter is required, please contact the Secretary General of the Organizing Committee SDFDS 2008.
PASSPORT & VISA
Sweden is part of the Schengen Agreement. A valid passport entitles EU and North American citizens to a three-month stay in Sweden. Visas are not usually required but non-EU citizens are advised to check with the Embassy of Sweden. SDFDS 2008 participants needing a visa for entry to Sweden are strongly advised to make their application in their home country well in advance.
CERTIFICATE OF ATTENDANCE
A Certificate of Attendance will be issued to all who participate in the two days of Military Conferences.
REGISTRATION/TUITION FEE
There will be a registration/tuition fee of 250 SEK for all Military Delegates attending SDFDS meeting 2008.
INSURANCE
SDFDS registration fees do not include insurance of any kind. It is strongly recommended that at the time you register for the military meeting and book your travel you take out an insurance policy of your choice.
LANGUAGES
The official language in Sweden is Swedish but most Swedes also speak English.
The official language of the SDFDS is English. All presentation submissions must be typed in English and all presentations must be held in English.
AIRPORT TRANSFER
Arlanda Airport is located 42 km north of Stockholm. Arlanda Express is the train service that links Stockholm City with the Airport. The journey takes about 20 minutes and costs SEK 200 each way. The train leaves Arlanda Airport every 15 minutes. There is also a direct bus connection from Arlanda Airport to the City Terminal in Stockholm. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs SEK 95. The bus leaves Arlanda Airport every 10 minutes. Should you choose to take a taxi from the airport we strongly recommend that you request a fixed price from the airport to the city, approx. SEK 500. It is recommended that you use the largest taxi companies: Taxi Stockholm, Taxi Kurir and Taxi 020. These companies accept all major credit cards. (Prices given as per August 2007)
TIME
Sweden conforms to Central European Time, which is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Daylight saving time (put your clock 1 hour forward) is in effect from the last weekend in March to the last weekend in October.
BANKING / CURRENCY
The currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona, SEK. Banking hours are generally Monday – Friday 10.00 am – 3.00 pm, extended opening hours on Thursdays until 4.00/5.30. Foreign exchange offices are open daily, usually 9.00 am – 7.00 pm.
CLIMATE AND CLOTHING
Average day temperature in September is 15 C (59 F). The weather might vary from mild and pleasant to rainy and windy. An overcoat is usually necessary.
CREDIT CARD
Commonly accepted credit cards in hotels, restaurants and shops are American Express, Diners Club, Visa, Master Card and Euro card. Restaurants and shops generally display signs indicating what cards they accept.
DRINKING WATER
The tap water in Sweden is perfectly safe to drink.
ELECTRICITY
The normal electric current in Sweden is 220 volts AC in 50 cycles.
HEALTH AND MEDICARE
If you need medical services during the stay in Sweden, visit the nearest clinic (Vårdcentral) or hospital emergency room (Akutmottagning). Bring your passport, documents and health insurance. Dial 112 for emergency assistance from police, fire brigade, ambulance etc. Emergency calls from pay phones are free of charge.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Stockholm has an extensive network of metro trains (T-bana), commuter trains and buses. Metro station entrances are marked with a blue T on a white background. Connections are punctual, reliable and safe. Tickets and travel cards are sold via agents, at the SL Center, at commuter train stations and at the metro barriers. Ticket machines can be found at selected bus stations and unmanned train stations. Tickets cannot be bought onboard.
RELIGION AND PLACES OF WORSHIP
The Church of Sweden is Lutheran, but most other religions are represented in Sweden and have places of worship in or around Stockholm.
SAFETY
Stockholm is a safe city, but as in all major cities, pickpockets are around, especially in areas with lots of people, such as shopping areas, metro stations and trains.
SHOPPING
Shops are open 10.00 am – 6.00 pm on weekdays and 10.00 am – 3.00 pm on Saturdays. Shops in the city centre have extended opening hours, some even on Sundays 12.00 am – 4.00 pm.
SMOKING RESTRICTIONS
Smoking is not permitted in most public indoor areas or onboard domestic aircraft or other public transport. Smoking is not permitted at stores, shops, restaurants, coffee shops or other public buildings. Hotels offer special rooms for non-smokers.
TIPPING
Tipping is not a widespread custom in Sweden. A service charge is automatically included in most Swedish hotel bills. Tipping for special services provided by hotel staff is fine, but not expected and is simply a matter of personal taste. At restaurants, a service charge is included in the bill, but a small gratuity is expected for evening meals (approx. 7-10%).
